Disney Keeps Trying to Rip Off Wicked Without Understanding the Point of Wicked

They made Maleficent and Cruella, and now apparently they’re making movies about Hades and Mother Gothel, which I’m sure will encounter the same problems.

I think to them, Wicked boiled down to “she became evil because people were mean to her.” Which is true, Elphaba was ostracized and bullied. But Wicked is so much more than that. It’s about oppressive governments use propaganda to turn their citizens against the “other.” Wicked was a commentary about the nature of evil, how we perceive evil, and how those in power can decide who’s good and who’s evil.

The Disney movies lack any kind of larger commentary on the nature of good and evil, how we perceive it, and how we let the powerful dictate to us who’s good and evil. They’re just “sad backstory=I’m evil now=but not really because I’m still a protagonist in a Disney movie so I get redeemed in the end.”
