New to outdoor walking. Advice needed
Hello everyone. I’m in the process of weight loss. Im a 42year old male with about 40 extra pounds of weight to loss. I’ve lost 20lbs so far with diet and exercise.
I have an elliptical, Bowflex, and select a weight dumbbells. I would go on elliptical for 20-30 minutes a day and do 1.5 to 2 miles. But I would get so bored. I never did treadmills because I’ve always seemed to have feet issues that podiatrists just haven’t had any luck with. I also lift weights 4 times a week.
Anyways, since I’m finding it hard to stay motivated on the elliptical I decided to start walking outside. It seems more challenging and fun. I am having a few issues though.
First is I can’t seem to get my pace going. My Apple Watch says around 20-24 minute miles for my walk if I go casually at my own pace. If I intentionally stay focused I will average around 20. If I push my self, I get to 18.
But at 18 minute mile pace the inner middle part of my soles on both feet start feeling tight and achy. I do notice some tightness in my calves and my left hip as well. I’ve been trying stretching; it helps at the moment but the pain and tightness comes back.
I’m aiming for 2 miles a day(weather permitting, it’s January in Ohio…). I’d like to get up to 3 miles but if I go past two my shins also start hurting.
Where do I start? How do I figure out functionally what my issue is and how to correct? I will attach a sceeenshot of my mile walk this morning. It’s bitter cold so I wasn’t having it. I did push myself today and got a decent pace for me, but my dogs are barking now. Thanks for any advice and help!
