Banned after reporting driver harassment
I used Uber as a rider for 4 years, had a rider rating within 4.0-5, and would tip drivers. During the 4 years, most the drivers and I built a level of acquaintance and would chat.
I experienced an incident of harassment from a driver I had not met before. The day of the incident I requested Uber to get home from work. The ride started as most usually did. The driver and I did small talk to pass the time. A block away from my house, the driver said I am cute. I thought it was strange and chose to not comment. Once the driver approached my street he said I am so cute he did not want to drop me off. I was very uncomfortable then and still did not make a comment.
He stared at me from the rear view mirror and stated he’s allowed to call me cute because he is an old man. I told him I am uncomfortable. He asked in an agitated tone why I can’t take a compliment. By this point he stopped in front of my house. He did not unlock the door. I did not respond. He said I am an attractive woman and should take the compliment. I unlocked the door and quickly exited the car.
I know younger woman that take Uber and would hate for them to experience a similar situation with a driver that appears to be 40-50 years ago. To prevent other woman being harrassed, I reported the incident to Uber. I received a message saying an investigation would be done. That same day my Uber account was locked. I reached out to Uber support and received the attached message.
I now warn coworkers, friends, and family to be careful using Uber services as they too may be banned for reporting harassment. I am not sure what is the acceptable way to handle harassment, from Uber’s viewpoint.
