Advice for Peru Itinerary

Planning a trip to Peru next year and need some advice!! We’re only going for 8-9 days (not decided) and will be in Cusco the whole time! We have already planned for the 4 day Inca Trail towards the end of our trip, leaving 3-4 days open before. I want a day or two to spend in Cusco, however for the other day we were thinking Sacred Valley. After some research we found the Skylodge/Starlodge suites and have pretty much set our hearts on staying there one night. However it seems that staying here might make it difficult to explore other parts of Sacred Valley. Would we be missing out if we didn’t see the other parts of Sacred Valley? Should we not stay at Skylodge and instead do a day tour?? Just don’t want to be missing any “must sees”, but also don’t want to do anything too strenuous before the Inca!
