Firemaking Needs Something... Anything!
We were not shocked to see 110 FM with WC and Fletching, but the lack of any additions made it very dry. I hope we can rekindle the fun by adding something that would get the player base stoked up about burning wood (and incense).
Let's take a step back from the ongoing heat of the sub reddit and fuel up with some smoldering ideas. What is fire making in regards to other artisan skills? Not much because most of the xp methods send your gp up in smoke.
Other artisan skills like this one have methods of matching some gp / xp balance and ultimately a long flickering task that rewards a fun item. We have masterwork smithing and fletching now (soon an RC one too), primal foods, artificer's measure and blessed flask, the fort (kind of dim example), overload salves, and maybe others that I'm too hazy to remember.
I have a burning desire for a level 80 / 90 / 100 / 110 tiered incense lamp that could store 3, 4, 5 and 6 kindling embers. These tiers could be unlocked through a variety of fervent favors that take the player around Geilinor rasing hell and being arrested for arson at the request of a crippled dragon who's lost his flame and seeks to reignite his lost power.
In the end, I would have a blast with another skilling style boss that incorporates firemaking, smithing and crafting or some combination that has a rare drop for the final upgrade. One shadow of an idea could be to construct the proper weaponry to take down the bad dragon in the end for a 3-6 minute artisan only skilling boss.
The function of the incense thurible is to hot swap between any of the stored (3-6 depending on tier) incense perks currently in game at full strength by using a new currency from the skilling boss that keeps the incense timer and strength level. Gone are the days of burning out because you have 22 minutes left on a full buff, but you want to change from bossing to skilling.
Thanks for listening to me shoot some ideas out there and try not to sling any hate for skilling bosses, they deserve a warm embrace! Burn one for me, friend.
