What is a team kill?

I was on the way back to my team and it said team kill and I got another kill added to my score? I hadn’t damaged anyone in the last like 15 seconds.. I thought to get a kill you had to dammage within the last 3 seconds of them dying? I’m confused so if anyone could clarify I will appreciate it! Thanks
