We should talk about how there is very much a spot for Hollywood normies in Best Director and why people underestimated it?
For months people were saying the Directors branch is too high brow and international for a non-autuer director like James Mangold to get in and that the directors branch to would swap out an American for someone like Fargeat. But low and behold, Mangold made it in and Berger, an international director, missed out.
I think it's clear that despite the changes, there is very much an older Hollywood wing that favour's a guy like Mangold, who has suspensefully worked in Hollywood for nearly 3 decades, over a guy like Berger. A normie lane if you will. And I suspect this lane has been there all along but was more a less given to bigger names like Nolan and Spielberg in recent years.
