Potentially unpopular opinion on Joe Alwyn in the Brutalist
My boyfriend and I saw it together last night (this was my second time seeing it, his first) and when we were driving back he said Joe Alwyn was the best part and I literally laughed out loud. The first time I saw it I texted my friend during the intermission saying that he was fighting for that American accent with his life. It’s not that I don’t think he’s a good actor in general, I just genuinely don’t think he gave a particularly good performance in The Brutalist. He was cartoonishly villainous, his accent slipped constantly, and honestly he wasn’t even that memorable for me especially compared to Guy Pearce who played his father. I thought I would find that a lot of people felt the same, but I’ve been seeing strong opinions here and on Letterboxd saying that he deserves an Oscar nom or win. Anyone here feel the same way? I’ve seen plenty of people defend his performance so I’m not looking to disagree, just curious if anyone else thought he fell flat in this film.
