Concerning Conditions at The Farm's New "State-of-the-Art" Facility

As someone with firsthand knowledge from a friend currently incarcerated there, I want to share some concerning things I've heard about the new facility that is way different than how it's being presented.

Key Issues:

  • No outdoor recreation access whatsoever, meaning inmates can go 6+ months without fresh air or seeing the outside - a stark contrast to the facility's agricultural history that earned it "The Farm" nickname
  • All meals are day-old food transported from the Theo Lacy facility
  • Extremely early meal schedule (4am breakfast, 3pm ish dinner) creates 13-hour overnight fasting periods, particularly difficult for inmates who cannot afford commissary items
  • Complete elimination of in-person visitation, replaced entirely by video calls
  • Some inmates are housed there for up to 16 months under these conditions

While the facility is being marketed as modern and providing "more opportunities," these conditions appear to prioritize cost-cutting over basic human dignity and rehabilitation. The elimination of in-person visits particularly impacts family connections and support systems that are crucial for mental health and successful reintegration.

I'm sharing this because the public should know about the reality of The Farm and how much its changed. I know it's easy to say they are just inmates or criminals but some are there as first-time offenders who simply made a mistake and deserve to have fresh food and outdoor time. And honestly, all the hype of this new facility and what's really going on should be concerning to everyone.

Has anyone else had experience with this facility or similar modernization efforts that seem to reduce rather than enhance basic human rights?
