What obvious movie scene did you misinterpret?

It took me more than ten years to realize that Batman unwillingly saved Harvey Dent. In The Dark Knight, the Joker kidnaps Rachel and Harvey and gives Batman their locations, telling him he has to choose which one to save. Batman tells Gotham PD he's going after Rachel, which leads them to go after Harvey. When Batman arrives at one of the locations, it turns out that Harvey is the one who gets saved, while Rachel is blown to pieces.

From the first time I saw the movie in 2008, I always believed Batman intentionally lied to Gotham PD about whom he was going after, causing them both to try to save Harvey. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I realized the Joker switched the locations and that Batman actually went after Rachel.

How could I have misinterpreted this scene for so many years? I have no idea. Gordon and Gotham PD literally show up at a different location than Batman, we are shown two different explosions, and it's obvious from Batman's facial expression when he kicks open the door that he was expecting to see Rachel instead of Harvey.

To be honest, I kind of prefer my original interpretation. It suggests that Batman values Gotham and Harvey so highly that he would doom the love of his life to save them. It turns out he was just human after all and let his heart decide who to save.

Have you ever misinterpreted a scene in a similar way? Whether it was obviously wrong or where the scene became better in your opinion?
