External hard drive problems

I have a lot of problems with an external hard drive.

I can plug it in, open it. See folders and files. BUT when I try to open a folder or a file, the hard drive stops responding. I have great issues properly figuring out what is wrong, because my scanning of the drive ends up getting stuck.

I have succeeded in a hardware scan, but it turns up with no problems.
