Confused between General Surgery and Orthopaedics
Hello fellow Medicos! I’m a 2018 batch recent pass out and got a rank of 60k in this NEET PG 2024. My parents are okay to get me admitted in a Deemed University for PG and honestly I’m okay too because I don’t want to drop( gave my best in those 3-4 months and literally have 0 motivation to sit and study again)
I have always loved both the surgical branches - Ortho and General Surgery . Both fascinate me a lot but I somewhat enjoyed Orthopaedics a bit more during my internship and even got chance to assist in 2 ortho surgeries, did nailing , plating , suturing and enjoyed that a lot. Being a gym going person, 5’11’ height and strong built .. I literally merged with the residents there and made a good bond with all the ortho bros. The department was toxic but I don’t know why , I kinda felt all that manageable and enjoyed too.
Now at my rank, I can get both General Surgery and Orthopaedics so it’s all about making a choice here. I’m from Delhi-NCR and literally everyone I talked to told me to choose Gen. Surgery as Orthopaedics is saturated AF and it’s very difficult to find a job and make your name.
I even called a guy who is involved in Placements of Doctors and even he told that jobs for general surgeons are abundant and the pay is also higher for surgery as compared to ortho, plus I always have my Super Specialty option open after Surgery.
I’m 24 right now , have zero drops and okay with doing Super specialty too .
So , can please someone provide me a bit more insight about both these branches. Please avoid giving generalised answers like choose what you love and all, I equally loved all the core clinical specialties during my internship and I’m okay with medicine, surgery , ortho , dermatology and radio too! But my rank only allows to choose between ortho and surgery.
What is the long term scenario of both branches ? Is MCh Urology/Gastro better than Ortho+Fellowship a few years down the line or equal?
Sorry for the long post , I appreciate all the answers. Regards
