Just finished watching My neighbours the Yamadas and don’t understand why it isn’t talked about much
I'm rewatching every Ghibli movie chronologically and rating them. I recently finished watching My Neighbours the Yamadas and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I went into the movie expecting the same thing since I didn't find it interesting in the first watch, It just felt like a mid and quickly made film which was a far cry from Princess Mononoke, which is, in my opinion, one of their best movies However, after giving it another watch, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up liking it
It isn't as complex and magnificent as other Ghibli movies. It's just a little compilation of some funny sketches based on day-to-day life in a Japanese family; it doesn't really have an amazing original story, action-packed, thrilling scenes, or a masterpiece of a score. However, I think that's what makes it special—it's really nothing special, just a family living their lives with silly incidents of family life like fighting for the TV or forgetting your umbrella or a crush and so on.
,The one-hour film has a fairly simple plot that keeps going, but despite that, I found myself really liking it. I could relate to some of the family antics, laughed at some parts, and made comparisons to shows like The Simpsons. In between the humorous sketches, they managed to incorporate some more mature themes and important life lessons, which I was surprised to find in this film. With the simple but effective animation and a good score that did the film justice, I could say that I found it to be quite enjoyable.,
Now is it an overlooked masterpiece? No, is it the studio's best work? Also No, but is it good? Yes, don't expect a masterpiece form this film but I do recommend you give it a watch because maybe you might end up really enjoying it
