Suggest a book about the gay rights movement for my gay son who doesn’t realize how difficult it was

My son (21M) came out as gay this summer. It wasn’t a surprise to me or his mother. We are 110% supportive.

It’s a weird time to come out as gay. On one hand he is benefiting from the struggle and work of the past several generations who have secured rights and security for the community. He is genuinely unbothered by being gay (good!) and is living his life out loud. I’m thrilled for him!

But I worry we are about to take some huge steps backwards. I’m not sure he understands what it was like to be gay in America just a few decades ago.

Can you suggest a book that can shed some light on the struggles and heroes of gay America?

Thank you!
