CMV: Nuclear energy doesn't make sense for Australia

Just trying to get a sense check here as one of the major parties in Australia is pushing a policy to adopt Nuclear in the next 15 years in Australia. The peak scientific body in the country, the CSIRO has weighed in with not one, but two generational costing reports comparing all the available energy generation options and Nuclear still presents as the most expensive option, the longest to deploy and the most inflexible (ie, can't be turned on and off as needed easily).

Even when accounting for the extra poles and wires, the land needed and the batteries required to firm up generation - solar presented at current costings, 10 times cheaper than Nuclear. Not only this, but the roll out is much quicker and Solar can be turned on and off as needed (curtailed) whilst batteries can respond to grid demands in seconds.

In a place like Australia that has an open energy market where private and public companies compete at bid to deliver their power to the market; I can't see a circumstance where energy retailers will want to pay well above market price for Nuclear energy. To top it all off, the major party proposing this policy is yet to cost it or deliver detail.

TL;DR? I just don't see how Nuclear energy can fit within the current power mix in Australia when this country has such a large abundance of wind and solar. I don't understand how it can be a viable option for energy security when the timeline for roll out is at least 15 years away and in that time period, renewables along with batteries will get even cheaper.

Happy to hear some other opinions and change my mind on the subject.
