suggestions for possible scratched head on Sony WM-FX113 ?

made the shocking discovery the other week that one’s walkman sounding as if it’s playing music underwater is in fact not part of its retro charm, or that my tapes were just old & a bit creased. i’ve since been troubleshooting with a friend what the issue could be, and came across this weird mark.

we thought it was just some gunk stuck on the head mechanism, but even after some serious elbow grease + isopropyl application it still hadn’t budged. however running my nail over the visibly unchromed small rectangle, i realised i could actually feel a slight indent. no bloody clue what could’ve caused the metal to be basically scoured away, as it’s such a neat looking shape that’s slightly less-raised than the rest of the part.

unfortunately the head doesn’t just nicely screw off on this model either, it’s pretty well soldered on. my grandpa does have soldering equipment so i could theoretically attempt it, but i’m rather afraid of damaging the unit as it was a gift from my grandma. i’m also not sure if i’d need to track down the exact same model for the part or if any old one will do.

just looking for tips from anyone who may have experienced something similar or is able to weigh in with advice :)
