Sleep and managing diaper rash with newborn
My husband and I are first time parents, and could use some advice! Our baby is a week old, and as more anxious first timers, we spent the first few nights unable to fall asleep while she was asleep. Plus, she was cluster feeding and awake super frequently anyway. So we did a system where I’d feed (breastfeeding), then fall back asleep, he’d diaper change/swaddle/soothe her back to sleep, and either doze off next to her if she’d go down in her bassinet or stay up while she slept on him and wake me up once we hit the two hour mark to feed since she was under her birth weight. Then she’d feed for a while and he would sleep, then we’d trade again. During the day we’d both trade long naps, so we were able to get in 6-8 total hours of broken sleep.
Now that she’s back up to birth weight and we’ve been able to get her to sleep in her bassinet more consistently during the day and night, we’re going to to move toward both of us sleeping while she sleeps in her bassinet.
The snag is that she has diaper rash like right on her anus, so we’ve been avoiding wipes and rinsing her off, drying fully with a blow dryer, and then applying diaper cream and a new diaper. She’s super squirmy so it takes both of us to do the rinsing part (one holding and one rinsing). Everything we’ve read said to change her as soon as she poops, and we’ve learned that often times we’ll hear her poop (so much sharting) but she’ll stay asleep.
So my question is, if we’re sleeping while she’s sleeping and she poops mid-sleep, how bad is it for her diaper rash if she ends up sitting in a poopy diaper for x amount of time? And any suggestions to make the more involved diaper changes a one-person job?
Thank you!!
