What to do about gym anxiety?

Hi all, I’m 21 F, and I started going to the gym in the middle of last month. I’m trying to shed some pounds and maybe get a little toned in the process. So, I go to Planet Fitness, as it is the cheapest and least intimidating of all the gyms near me. I feel so much like an outsider; everyone I see at the gym seems to be friends or at least acquaintances with each other and even the gym staff. I feel like it’s really hard to implant myself in the community. Is this something that others who are first starting out are experiencing?

I also feel like a total fool like 90% of the time. I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. I mainly keep to the yellow machines that are intended for a 30-minute circuit but instead doing 3 sets of 15 reps per machine (the 30 minute circuit room doesn’t exist in my gym anymore, but the yellow machines still do and they all seem to be intended for use together hence the reason why I do all those machines). I feel like everyone is looking at me and knows that I don’t know what I’m doing. I feel like this is a universal experience for beginners at the gym.

Are there any things you guys did to overcome gym anxiety or the feeling of being an outsider in the gym?
