How do you handle a homophobic coworker?

A homophobic coworker was telling me shit (quote: "I want to shoot all gay men", "gay men are disgusting", etc), so I reported him to HR and they gave him a last warning thing, so next time he is out. He knows I’m the person who reported him. Now im afraid of what he might do.

Edit 2: Things haven’t gotten any better since my initial post. While HR gave him a final warning, his behavior has shifted to being more passive-aggressive. He doesn’t say anything outright, but he stares at me and mutters under his breath when I’m around. It’s unsettling, and I can’t shake the feeling that he’s just waiting for the right opportunity to retaliate.

I’ve brought these incidents to HR’s attention, but since they’re subtle and don’t directly violate company policies, their response has been to “keep documenting” and “report if it gets worse.” Honestly, it feels like they’re waiting for something serious to happen before stepping in.

Right now, I feel stuck. I’ve started looking for other jobs because I don’t feel safe or supported in this environment anymore. It’s draining and disheartening, but I know I deserve to work somewhere that won’t tolerate this kind of behavior.

To anyone going through something similar: put your safety and well-being first. Document everything, but also recognize when it’s time to walk away for your own peace of mind.

Edit 3: So today, I got an anonymous package with a letter attached. The letter said, “If I went to jail today, it wouldn’t matter. I’d be out in a couple of days,” and there was a Trump sticker next to it.
