My Stance on Peril..
(I will update this once I reread the rest of the books since I'm just on the first one rn)
And, before I say anything, this is not a hate post. I actually like Peril as a character by herself. She just has a lot of flaws that do not need to be skimmed over or normalized.
Peril is..a tricky character, to say the least. I remember thinking "oh, she's interesting" when I first read the series. And I liked her book. But there’s also something about her, ESPECIALLY after rereading book 1, that I hate and am extremely uncomfortable with.
Maybe it's just the fact that Tui cannot write romance and crushes to save her life, but the toxicity of Cleril always threw me off. She meets Clay, is unsure about him but talks to him anyway since he wants to know about his friends, then not even two or three days later she's being possessive and jealous? That doesn't sit right with me.
Crushes take time, even if it's only a month or two, but never a couple days. That's absurd. And the immediate obsession isn't healthy. She was obsessed with Clay before she even knew he could touch her, and then THAT just makes it worse. She gets angry whenever Clay mentions any other girl, even though he's made it clear that they're all like his little sisters (obviously cause he's their BigWings). And don't even get me started on her betraying the group just so Clay wouldn't leave.
So, she would rather risk Clay dying than him leaving and being alive? Very romantic of her. That's the dumbest plan ever, but no one never said Peril was very smart at common sense.
