When the canonical straight love story is so unpopular that the fandom almost universally embraces a gay fan couple in its place

  1. Korra and Asami. By far the most famous example. Season 1 and 2 set them up as romantic rivals for Makko's affections but they ended up traveling together in the spirit world at the end of LOK

  2. In Supergirl, the titular character had three main different male love interests (James Olsen, Mon-El and William Dey). In spite of this, she is still mostly paired with Lena Luthor.

  3. Wednesday Addams and Enid Sinclair. Similarly to Legend of Korra, the series features a love triangle involving Wednesday and two boys (Xavier Thorne and Tyler Galpin). By the end of season 1, however, most of the fandom and cast seem to ship the titular character more with her roomate Enid than with anyone else
