Today was the phone ban. An update
So, I made a post last week that got some traction about an upcoming phone ban at school. Some asked for an update. Here it is. As a para, I get the unique perspective of seeing how it is enforced or not enforced.
The day starts with the principal greeting students over the intercom and reminding them of the phone ban, and then emphasize that it is the teachers' contractual duty to enforce this.
1st period starts. Teacher says he knows some teachers won't enforce the ban, but he will. Student twitching and fidgeting starts within 5 minutes of the start of class. Students shaking their knees, making thumb-swiping motions, and tapping fingernails against the desk. But none of the students get their phones out and this none get their phones taken away.
Passing period is oddly quiet, with students immediately on their phones for the entire time.
2nd period starts. This teacher has hinted that they won't enforce the policy, so kids are on their phones like usual, aside from the one that got their phone taken by their 1st period teacher. They are super pissed and just watch YouTube on their Chromebook the whole time.
I am a bit torn about telling admin about the teacher's noncompliance. My boss tells me not to be a "snitch". I don't really agree with my boss.
3rd period starts and there are still no riots in the halls, but now the tapping on desks with fingernails has become a conscious thing that students are doing to... "protest"? Teacher tells them to stop, but like 1/3 of the class is doing it.
In the lunchroom, there are whispers of teachers not following the new rules and talk about all the nervous energy of the students with no outlet other their Chromebooks... but half the students have broken/dead Chromebooks.
The rest of the day progresses the same (so far). Half the teachers enforce the rule, half don't. I am somewhat surprised that the phone ban and the withdrawals didn't lead to students getting into fist fights.
