U.S.S. Sirio: another one of starfleet's mistakes

Hello everyone. People seemed to like the previous one so i thought up another unusual design. Any critques or comments are welcome off course.

Introducing the USS Sirio. An attempt by starfleet to re-use the old constitution class nacelle and deflector together with a whole heap of old Daedalus class Parts. All while testing out a whole new type of carrier.

Since the most expensive part of the Daedalus' ships was the whole warp assembly, it was decided to just get rid of it. Essentially turning it into a beefed up shuttle / mobile space station of sorts ( it had the capacity to land too) The remaining 'sphere' had much more room then the typical saucer and so it was excellent for transporting both large amounts of People and cargo. They were then retrofitted with new and powerfull impulse engines allowing for great manoeuvrability.

The sphere can be customized for any kind of mission. The default are the 3 departments of starfleet but they could just as Well serve for any other kind of purpose. (Colonisation, repair, ...)

Off course, what's the Point of a shuttle like that if you can't go anywhere?

This is where the Sirio comes in. The Sirio is actually just the nacelle and the deflector with main engineering. There's very little room inside and not at all comfortable. Attatched to it is a series of 'clamps' extending far beneath the Vessel. This is where the sphere would dock with the ship. The clamps are also adjustable and can accommodate any size of sphere.

But what would even be the point of this whole arrangement?

At the beginning of a mission, the orbs would dock with the Sirio. The Sirio would then take them all to warp and leave them at their destination. Then it's divide and conquer. The spheres split up and go about their buisness all across the star systema the same time. This would save a significant amount of time compared to just a single ship that would have to pick and choose one thing at a time. And if anything ever goes wrong, then there's always some Else around to help. Plus the spheres would contain a whole lot more equipment and crew then a small shuttle ever could.

So to starfleet, it seemed like the perfect idea. Sadly, the first prototype, the Sirio, would end up proving them wrong.

The Daedalus' spheres were never designed to be used at the high warp speeds that it's warp assembly could take it too. Even with upgrades, the aging and flawed design would begin to shake apart. So it was limited to low warp travel (compared to it's contemporary ships)

Secondarily, there was the whole concern of safety. If any hostile were to engage with the spheres, they might be able to fight back for a little but the spheres simply were not that Well equipped for battle and without a warp core, they couldn't escape either.

All these concerns together put a hold on the program. It was briefly considered to start manufacturing brand new Parts to replace the aging designs but that would defeat the whole purpose of the re-use program in the first place.

So in the end, it was not some attack, or some mad scheme that an admiral pulled but simple and boring economics that killed this ship.

Over the years, the whole project would be buried under a mountain of paperwork and eventually forgotten to time.

Only the Sirio, the first and only of it's kind would remain. Even with it's many flaws, it Found it's role as a support ship within the federation's borders. And even though it Never went on any grand missions, for many, many years it continued to serve the federation until it's eventual decommisioning
