How can I get Parental Bond to work?

I’ve tried everything to get Trunks to transform but he won’t. I end up beating him quickly or it gets drawn out and the match will end. Is there a way to force it or at least retry if it gets to a certain point? Guides say to deal massive amounts of damage while sparking but after my 6th attempt he is just too stubborn.
