Matted Fur
Hi Everyone! I spayed my 7 month Sheepadoodle about 3.5 weeks ago. During her spay she had to wear a cone.
About half way through the 14 day recovery, we noticed she wasn't healing as fast as she should. She has the activity level of an Olympic athlete and the vet didn't provide many sedatives, only enough Trazadone for 5 days...and that hardly made a dent.
Fast-forward to 14 days and her incision healed internally BUT not externally. We were told she would have to continue to wear a cone for another 12 days. We also opted for a spay suit for extra protection.
This time the vet provided enough antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, Trazadone, and Gabapentin for 10 days. During this time her wound healed and looks great. She has been released from the cone of shame. The problem is that the fur on her head, ears (the cone), and some parts of her body (surgical suit) is severely matted.
No matter what kind of comb I buy or conditioner I use, I can't get them to budge.
Do you think it would be ok to have her shaved? We live in Southwest Texas so the winter isn't too harsh, and I can definitely buy her a few pieces of clothing items, but do you think she'll suffer because of the weather or the shave? I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons. I feel very bad for her and don't want to worsen the matting.
