On the dialog cut from "The We We Are".

You can see the script for "The We We Are", the season 1 finale, here. It's interesting to me what got cut, in the final edit of that episode.

There are two cuts that I notice. One, which has been commented on a lot before, is a scene where a technician shows Natalie, Helly and Jame (Lumon CEO and Helly's biological father) footage of Mark kissing Helly. Natalie and Jame's reactions show that this is a huge transgression. And Jame says:

JAME: Ugly! Filthy! She used your mouth to- Innie bitch!

The other cut dialog, which I haven't seen commented on, is part of the conversation between iMark and Devon, where iMark reveals he is, indeed, innie Mark. Devon tells iMark that oMark has been trying to figure out what Lumon is up to; here is the cut dialog that follows:

Mark laughs a little.

MARK: Tell him thanks for his curiosity.

She stares at him a long moment.

DEVON: Do you hate him?

Mark sighs.

MARK: I just want to know why. Why he put me in there, and- why he thinks he deserves the whole world, while I sit in a prison. I mean, we’re the same fucking person.

She nods, pensive.

DEVON: You guys say “fucking” the same way.

He looks at her, not sure why this is relevant.

What I find interesting is what these cut bits of dialog have in common. Both of them reinforce the distinctness of the innie and outtie identities, and the antagonism between innie and outtie. The decision to cut them both seems like an effort to soften that antagonism.

I don't see the Helly-Jame-Natalie scene as a big loss, and maybe it's even better not to have it. But I think it's a shame that the Mark-Devon dialog was cut. I think iMark is *right* to be angry, and it's satisfying to see that anger. I also think exploring the antagonism between him and oMark, and the way their interests do not align, is interesting.
