Beacon Hill

Moving home to Seattle, making just over 70K, can I afford an apartment in Beacon Hill and what is the vibe? Walkable? My first choice was International District which was my all time favorite neighborhood ten years ago, but everyone says it is terrible now and unsafe. How heartbreaking. I will be teaching at Seattle U at night, want to live closeby, and getting home late so safety is a priority. thanks for any guidance.
