Surgery resident and fellow salary after finishing medical school
This is the salary breakdown for surgery residents in a major US city at an academic program. Program year 1 are interns. Year 5 are chief residents. If you’re a PGY6, that also includes fellows who are board certified general surgeons getting specialty training. And don’t forget the up front cost surgeons pay in training. 4 years of med school costs 200k with ~7% interest on the loans. then 5-7 years of residency making 60-70k. Plus 1-2 years of fellowship making 70-80k. THEN a salary over 300k starting in your mid 30s with 250k debt to start paying off. Not to mention working 80hr/week over that time period. Having to pick up extra shifts without any extra pay. Call shifts lasting 36hr without a remote thought of sleep. Also parental leave is just your vacation days, nothing extra unless you get approved for an unpaid LOA and then have to repeat a year.
