Why did SNH48 + their sister groups do less of these performances since the Mid10s?
I found SNH48 and their sister groups through this classic video. Ever since that, I found a lot of stages in the mid-10s where the girls did a lot of overt sexual things, though arguably it was for the male gaze. A few of my favs [the last one is legendary to me].
However, now the girls don’t seem to do those things. They never kiss, but they do touch each other quite a lot (looking at you Wang Yi and Zhou Shiyu :p) on stage. [I love this and this!] I do know there are new group members since then, but I am curious why they had suddenly shed that image? I personally prefer them now [especially the ones I linked], although now you can argue SNH48 is gayer than before. For example, WY and ZSY actually like each other [and are together] so this isn’t a performance of straight girls. Back then, you could really tell they were straight girls performing for the male gaze.
Is it from China’s increasing LGBT censorship that began in the late 10s? Or is SNH48 + their sister groups trying to shed that male gaze-y image and, I suppose, be more mature/cooler? In the mid10s, a lot of times they looked like 18 year olds dancing, but now they appear older/mature (even if they are 18). Their songs in the mid10s were kinda cheesy (but I still love “Don’t Touch”)! This year, they made Number One and the album Alpha Core, which is super different! [I am so disappointed that WY, ZSY and YYQ never did a performance of “Don’t Touch” though, hahaha]
My frame of reference for SNH48 + the other groups is just these mid10s performances and the current generation [with Wang Yi, Zhou Shiyu and Yuan Yiqi] so anyone can correct me if I am wrong/talking out of my ass about this topic! I’m just starting to try to learn about SNH48 as someone who snitches together bits and pieces and depends on the kindness of others to translate. I hope my thoughts make at least a tiny bit of sense!
