Hearing random dripping noise around hot water tank

I have a electric 40 gallon hot water tank with a overflow tank. Sometimes I hear it dripping from behind the tank where I cannot see. It doesn't do it all the time just off and on and there is never any water to be found or seen. I moved in a few months ago and it has done this since I moved in. Is this normal?
