AS THE CLOTH SOAKS

AS THE CLOTH SOAKS
In size and depth,
It surpasses the sea;
Its outstretched fingers
Trace my skin icily.
/
Infiltrating
The world inside of me
It creeps steadily,
Thick like drops of honey.
/
I have always known it—
It’s vivid like spring.
With eyes closed or open,
Its presence still sings.
/
Alongside its voice,
Tomorrow’s violins
Draw their bows across
My worn heartstrings.
/
I am a courtyard
Hidden from the sun;
Over my hydrangeas,
Its long shadow hums.
/
But help me define it;
It’s without a name;
This pervasive darkness
No word can contain.
/
It starts as a bloodstain
On my ivory clothes—
Bleeding through snow
Like an unsmiling rose.
/
And as the cloth soaks,
I soak just the same,
Until my white cloth
Is wholly scarlet-stained.
