How many rejections are you guys receiving when applying for flats to rent?

Hi all,

My partner and I have been searching for a new apartment for 10 months now. We have been invited to a handful of viewings so far despite many applications. However, we have never been successful in any requests to move in after viewing the flat.

My partner earns a very good salary and is also German so there has never been any difficulty in communication with the landlords. All of our paperwork is perfectly presented and all the necessary details are included. I earn a decent enough salary to live in Munich but not exactly ‘impressive’. Average I would imagine.

We cannot understand why we keep getting rejected and we are left wondering about other people’s experiences. I suspect we are losing out to other couples who simply earn more and are thus considered a safer investment for the landlord. But it makes me wonder how anyone can find a place to live here if two university educated white collar workers are struggling this much.

My partner lived in Munich before me for some time and also had a very hard time convincing a landlord to take them on. I am from the UK and my partner has a slightly ‘unusual’ or foreign sounding surname - I would like to think that this wouldn’t hold us back but given the conservative reputation of Munich do you suppose this could also be an issue?

I’d like to hear about other people’s journeys and what you did to finally secure a place to live. I would like to think our lack of success doesn’t just come down to casual bigotry but I really have no idea.
