My Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Experience

Hey, everyone! After reading a ton of horror stories surrounding the hysterosalpingogram (HSG), I wanted to share my personal experience which … actually wasn’t that bad.

First, here’s what I did prior to my HSG:

  • I was prescribed 1 Valium (Diazepam) and took it 90 minutes prior to my HSG.

  • I was instructed to take 800mg of Motrin 1 hour prior to my HSG. (I took 4 200mg capsules of Motrin.)

Here’s what the procedure was like:

  • I was instructed to sit toward the end of the table. There were no stirrups, so I had to put my feet up and basically spread eagle (🤣).

  • I was lying completely down and I wasn’t looking at the utensils. I felt the slight discomfort of being opened from the inside, and I was advised when the dye was injected. During this process, I felt slight discomfort similar to period cramping and a slight internal burning sensation. I would rate the discomfort 4-4.5/10, and I fortunately did not experience any pain.

I’m not sure exactly how long the test lasted, but I would say less than 10 minutes, possibly even 5 minutes.

** My fallopian tubes were not blocked, they were both open. A few polyps were discovered. I’m not sure if my lack of pain had to do with open tubes, so I thought that was worth noting.

If you have an HSG scheduled try not to worry. I had seriously psyched myself out so much that I thought something would go seriously wrong during the procedure. I spent a lot of time reading Reddit stories where women reported intense pain, so I was panicking and highly upset before the procedure.

Highly recommend getting a driver so you can take the Valium/Diazepam, and make sure you take the 800mg of Motrin.

Hope this helps somebody! 💕

Update 9PM: My HSG was at 2PM. Feeling some light cramping, nothing painful.
