What's the consensus on upgrading speakers because of tonal characteristics versus just using an EQ to tailor the sound?

For example; I have a marshall 2x12 with 70/80s in it and I see recommendations to upgrade for better "tone". Can the color of the tone not be adjusted to match a different speaker with some EQ tweaking? Or am I looking at this wrong?
