Lose Yourself disrespect is insane

The song is overplayed. It's a shame he doesn't perform a wider variety if songs live. However...

Lose Yourself is literally his best song. I've been on this sub for years, and people are so biased because of its popularity. I get how that could affect your enjoyment, but it really shouldn't change your assessment of it's quality.

Just now, I saw someone saying 8 Mile was better, and had better lyrics. I'm not sure what their criteria for lyricism is, but the first verse of Lose Yourself (the best verse) maintains am impressive three syllable rhyme scheme for half the verse, as well as interweaving various other multis in a beautiful mosaic pattern. Throughout the whole song, he plays with a sense of tension, as - whilst the beat maintains a mostly level amount of complexity throughout - Em's verses constantly build, with rhythm, and more complex rhymes, never getting monotonous throughout the song.

The content and delivery are insane. You can get misty eyes over the third verse, due to the sheer level of passion poured into his voice. The desperation depicted in the central character, and the hope he holds onto as his rap career takes off. Eminem recaps the plot of 8 Mile, whilst zooming in on a particular moment - Rabbit choking - and unpacks the internal turmoil through his lyrics. Not only that, but the song is performed with such rawness, that this is not only a master-class in lyric writing, but in vocal delivery as well. If you thought the verses hit hard, wait until you hear his hook - it's a fictional story, but you can tell how strongly he believes in the message of the track: believing in yourself and accomplishing anything you set out to do.

The beat is rock-inspired, but doesn't lean fully into rock/rap, instead heavily representing the pinnacle of hip-hop, which is a good job, because to many, this was their introduction. I understand that it's popular, but have you ever thought that Marshall selected this song because he knew it was so good? Rabbit Run was never going to be as popular with general audiences, which is more a reflection of conventional tastes than actual quality, but I put it to you that if Rabbit Run was given a hook, and released as the lead single from 8 Mile, it would not have nearly the same legacy as Lose Yourself does.

I guess I just want people to make their own opinions. It sucks to like something because uts popular, but in my view, it's equally insane to discount something for being popular. Not only is Lose Yourself amongst the most popular rap songs ever recorded, I would say it's one of the best, not only within its genre, but in all of music. As far as Eminem's catalogue, it doesn't come close. Stan is up there, but he struck gold with these two, and I really think we need to start putting respect back on its name.

Edit: It's so clear that most people aren't reading the whole post
