Other potential systems for D20 to explore
I love dimension 20 and 5e, but it really feels like some of the stories they're telling could be enhanced/better supported if they branched into other systems beyond heavily homebrewed 5e. Love the systems Aabria's brought to the table and how it's influencing Brennan's games between Mentopolis and NSBU. It got me thinking of some of the systems I've read/played and think would be cool to see the D20 crew play:
Blades in the Dark for a heist season (built-in mechanics to do a flashback during a heist and explain how something going wrong was actually part of the plan all along)
An OSR game like Worlds Without Numbers for a grittier, deadlier world where even high level characters can be felled by a bunch of peasants with crossbows. I feel like this kind of system is what they would've used for ACOC in an ideal world. (As a bonus, the Stars Without Numbers, Cities Without Numbers, and Ashes Without Numbers systems are all compatible for sci-fi, cyberpunk, and western themed games that I'm sure the dropout crew could really leverage to have some cyberpunk cowboy wizards in space story)
An actual horror system like Call of Cthulhu for horror games. The Stepmother and existential dread of the season feels like it would've played well with the mechanics here.
FATE seems like it would work wonders for the improv skills of the cast, with the aspects they can spend to directly influence the story. The system also encourages more traditional story structure than the "simulation" approach that DnD typically takes.
What systems would you like to see the D20 crew explore?
