For the first time since the 2014 offseason, we end the year with no major questions at coaching staff or QB going into next season
Optimism for this team is at a high we haven’t seen in a long time and one of the major reasons is because, for the first time in a long time, we don’t need to fill a major role. Every single offseason has had us question either QB, HC or at least coordinator.
2015 Offseason: After a disappointing end to the 14/15 year, we figure John Fox can’t get the job done. Taking a risk we move on, leading us to Gary Kubiak. Peyton, despite a rough end to the year, is still clearly the QB.
2016 Offseason: We win it all, Kubiak is gladly welcomed back. But Peyton Manning is laid out to pasture, retiring. This starts the big question of who the next QB is?
2017 Offseason: Kubiak’s health problems lead him to stepping down leaving a massive hole and question at who his replacement is. It’s also worth noting that while Trevor Siemian battled admirably, we still don’t know who the starting QB will be in the upcoming season.
2018 Offseason: Rookie HC Vance Joseph has an absymal first season after a hot start, but is given another year. That said the Siemian/Lynch experience has reached its end and we are still searching the void for our next QB still.
2019 Offseason: A dark time, Vance is let go after another disappointing year. We are still looking for our next HC. Case Keenum, while a nice guy, is not the answer at QB. We desperately need to find a franchise guy, so once more back into the void there too.
2020 Offseason: The closest we would come to hope. Rookie HC Vic Fangio has an up and down first year but ends strong enough for us to be hopeful in his second season. And for once we do know who our starting QB is as rookie Drew Lock ended the year showing promise that we know he’s the next guy. This offseason only qualifies because we move on from OC Scangarello, so our move at there will prove huge.
2021 Offseason: The season goes poorly and Fangio skims by for another season by way of injuries and likely the wackiness of the 2020 covid year. Still Drew Lock’s year goes awfully, arguably the worst starting QB in the league. It’s known that the Broncos will bring in competition and who the starting QB will be is fully in question once again.
2022 Offseason: Despite some improvement, Fangio is very clearly not the coach of the future and is given the axe. The Lock/Bridgewater combo is not worth investing more time as neither is a long term answer. So once again we are searching for both HC and QB coming out of the year.
2023 Offseason: Nathaniel Hackett, supposed football coach, spends the season understanding how to count and is fired before even finishing the year. The big splash Russ Wilson acquisition is a abject disappointment, but he is given the caveat because of organizational incompetence, so we know who the QB is at least. Need that HC still.
2024 Offseason: HC Sean Payton gets some major improvements out of Denver, enough that he is still clearly the HC moving forward. That said QB Russ Wilson is not viable as a starting QB long term anymore and despite his massive cap hit, the Broncos move on and search for their next QB.
And now: Simply put, Sean Payton is the HC and Bo Nix is the QB. No questions. And barring a HC hire we know our coordinators. For the first time in 11 years we can finally build on top.
