A suggestion that could end this NSFW debate once and for all
Hi all,
For some time, especially recently, there has been discourse surrounding NSFW posts on this sub. Some users sharing their distaste in the endorsement of the artwork, while others say it doesn't violate any of the rules. There is this unnecessary and sometimes condescending back and forth between these two parties and I am tired of seeing it. I know it's Reddit and arguments over frivolous controversies are expected (shocker!), however I can understand where each side is coming from. I joined the subreddit in 2017 and was here during the height of the game's popularity. NSFW art was around, but I would be lying if I said it was as plentiful as it is today. I know this community is 7 years old now and Dan Salvato may never visit DDLC again, so of course people will get bored. Moreover, this lack of new media may very well be why NSFW content is seen as more consistent, which could have sparked this discussion in the first place. But I digress.
Anyway, after pondering about the situation some more, I believe the reason why users are having a hard time understanding, is due to confusion of Rule 5 itself. Now what is Rule 5? It is - "No sexually explicit posts or excessive gore. No content of a sexually explicit nature, pornographic intent, overly fetishistic nature, or including excessive gore." The one key word some users seem to misinterpret is 'Explicit'. The Oxford definition of 'Explicit' means - "It is stated clear and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt." The biggest problem lies in the fact that one person's definition of Explicit can be totally different than another person's. Some view the slight over exposure of skin and exaggerated features as explicit, while others see explicit as only excessive nudity and pornographic acts. This is where the confusion draws from, and why we have a disconnect on our hands.
If I were to make a simple suggestion that would benefit everyone on this sub, and could potentially eliminate every single one of these posts for and against NSFW, it would be to reword how Rule 5 is explained. It could be as easy as this - "Rule 5. NSFW content is allowed but must be marked and to a varying degree. Extreme Fetishes and Nudity are Prohibited." Something as simple as this, I believe, does a significantly better job at defining what Rule 5 is, less is more. And current NSFW posts, OC or Found art, follow this notion anyway. Now I am no mod, so I wouldn't know how easy or hard it is to implement a change in how Rule 5 is articulated, but this is just food for thought. If this change were to be put into affect, I feel there would be no more confusion, meaning no more turmoil. If someone opens a NSFW post while they are not fancy to its contents to begin with, it is 100 percent on them, as the rules are easier to understand and the post was already marked. This is a total win-win situation for everyone involved. This may never happen, though if a mod is reading this post, I am confident that a change such as this could bring more clarity and transparency to this subreddit, increasing its longevity more so.
