Antarean Tank Death Stare

FANLORE YAP: During the Battle of Hadina, War Journalist Maurie Flores was mistakenly shot by an Antarean tank while documenting the conflict. In 1940, the Battle of Hadina involved brutal close-quarters combat. At the height of the battle, Maurie Flores was sent to Hadina to report on the situation. She was accompanied by the 22nd Infantry Combat Brigade Team and took shelter in a chapel along with the brigade.

In this area, infantry companies from the 8th Infantry Division were attempting to cross a road held by Riaan Forces. The 22nd ICBT was positioned in a building, providing fire support for the infantry division. The offensive was bolstered by tanks from the 2nd Armored Division. During the fighting, an Antarean tank entered the road to provide machine gun fire support.

The tank commander, who was later killed in action, spotted movement at one of the chapel's windows. Fearing that the 22nd ICBT had been neutralized by Riaan Forces and that the 2nd Infantry Division was now vulnerable, the tank commander ordered the gunner to load armor-piercing high explosive (APHE) rounds and aim at the windows. Although the loader and gunner hesitated, the commander insisted.

In the midst of this tension, Maurie managed to capture a photo of the Antarean tank aimed towards their window. After taking the picture, the gunner fired at the window with an APHE round, severely injuring the fire team. Two members were killed in action, while Maurie survived but sustained serious injuries. She was evacuated from the battle and transported back to Skorpius, where she included this incident in her documentation.

The photo would go on to become one of the most iconic images of the Centauran Wars.
