Do people ever really "get it"?
So, I was chatting with a friend yesterday about my new diagnosis. I love this friend and we are able to share so many great things, so I had high hopes for her understanding.
She asked about celiac. I explained what I knew. I had also just read an article stating that a piece of gluten the size of a pinhead can cause intestinal damage, so I shared that with her.
She replied with "yeah, but there are still a lot of things you can eat" and I'd say yes of course, that's not what I'm worried about. My concern is cross-contamination. She replied with, yes but it's only wheat you can't eat? Etc.
Anyway, I guess my point is that with her and certainly with others, I've felt unheard when it comes to the aspect of cross-contamination. The loss of not being able to just eat safely in any restaurant I please. The concern that comes when anyone other than myself prepares my food.
Does anyone ever actually understand? Are we just destined to be misunderstood and have the impact of this disease minimized for the rest of our lives?
Have YOU succeeded in getting the information regarding the severity and anxiety this disease across to the people that you love? I'm in education and I am tempted to make a PowerPoint, but I'm not even convinced if that will work 😂
