Advice on getting a second cat

Those that have adopted an additional kitty after having a single kitty for a while (6 months in our case), what were your experiences? Did it help improve the original cat’s behavior (calm them down, make them feel less lonely, maybe teach them that biting hard is bad, etc), or did it just create more issues for you with two cats now acting out, or not getting along?
