PSA - smart scammers impersonating telecoms.
I am a person who changes phone plans frequently in pursuit of good deals. $25/150GB 5G currently.
Most of these deals have been a result of cold calls from the telecoms with various offers.
I've noticed twice recently that I have received calls that sounded VERY similar to the official calls, which didn't used to happen.
They didn't offer anything too good to be true or behave in a pushy manner.
The two things that threw me off were:
They transferred me to a different person to seal the deal. A "manager". That has not happened before with the legitimate calls.
They sent me an email with the details from a domain that doesn't appear to be legitimate. That was what really threw me off and convinced me it was a scam.
The email itself looked pretty legitimate, pretty decent English and nice formatting.
I then hung up and contacted Rogers, who confirmed the numbers don't belong to them. They said they will always call from a 1-800 / 1-866 type number. This was a 613-526 number.
I am posting this to hopefully prevent anyone from getting scammed. I am a professional software developer who is quite familiar with the telecom systems and still almost fell for it. These guys really were playing it very similarly to how the actual telecom sales calls work.
So the takeaways:
Get email confirmation of an offer before agreeing or offering your personal info. Verify it's a legitimate domain.
Look for 1-800/1-866 numbers rather than normal numbers.
If you get a bad feeling, trust your gut and ask for further verification or take a few minutes/hours to think about everything.
