Gym Membership harassment (Melbourne, VIC)

Hi guys, I’m in a bit of a problem(?) with my gym. So last year when I moved suburbs, I contacted my gym to cancel my membership because I wasn’t living at home anymore and couldn’t use the gym. They were very difficult about it but I eventually sorted it out and cancelled it.

Or so I thought. Apparently they didn’t cancel my membership and because everything was done on the phone I have no proof of cancellation. They had been sending me membership fee payments in which I haven’t been receiving and now because I haven’t paid in months they sent my thing to a debt collector and I now need to pay about $1000 by Sunday or they take it further.

I cancelled my membership around October 2023 and a month or two after that got a new account. After contacting the gym, they said that they had apparently been trying to charge my old account which I no longer use.

I’m aware that it was not very responsible on my part to not get an official record of my cancellation, but I just wanted to know of there’s any way that I can legally prove that I indeed tried to cancel my membership and so I don’t get charged?
