Guitar Recs for Partner?

Hi all! Obligatory "I'm new to this subreddit" disclaimer, please excuse any mistakes in formatting or the like!

My fiance and I recently moved to the Netherlands from South Africa, and so he had to sell all of his musical instruments. Our anniversary is coming up and I'd love to get him an acoustic guitar (because I won't have to worry about amps or anything like that) but I have absolutely no clue what to look for in terms of price, quality, brands etc.

I think he had a Fender Squier acoustic guitar, but I could be mistaken.

What are good brands to look out for, and what should I be aware of? I would ask him, but obviously I don't want to ruin the surprise.
