Venting about the U.S. inauguration, what are your thoughts?
I want to vent about the inauguration I just watched. I wasn’t expecting it to be super inclusive, but the heavy Christian emphasis made it feel like other beliefs are completely overshadowed. There was overtly Christian music played (some worship-style songs), open references to Jesus, and statements about Americans needing to bow down to the “one true God.” Even Franklin Graham read Bible verses, and there were multiple prayers that centered only on Christian theology. It really drove home how Donald Trump and his office thinks and governs, highlighting a strong Christian-nationalist tone.
For me, that’s a big reality check no matter what we do and what the law says, many Americans still see this country under the Christian religion and don't want any other religious beliefs to be represented. In theory, this moment is supposed to be about unifying the whole country, but it felt more like a nod to a group of people Trump likes rather than an inclusive representation of everyone. It’s frustrating to see the ceremony reinforce a narrow scope instead of acknowledging the diverse backgrounds and faiths that make up the U.S.
It seems like the separation of church and state doesn't matter and we're all supposed to accept what is happening. Feels like an agenda to make other belief systems and people feel less than, less American, less free, and less valued in this country.
Is anyone else feeling disappointed or alienated by this kind of messaging? How do you cope when these national events don’t reflect your beliefs or values?
